The Night Paintings Suite:

At my age, I find I no longer need much sleep. My thoughts, constantly revolving around my paintings, often keep me awake. When this happens, I head to my studio and work until the early hours of the morning. During just six weeks, from mid-November to shortly after Christmas 2024, I created a large suite of work I call "Night Paintings." I have never been so fulfilled by my art as I am now. There’s something profoundly mysterious about those nights, losing myself completely in the creative process, as if the silence of the dark feeds my inspiration.

About the Artist:

Eric Klemm, a German-born artist, has spent a lifetime weaving art, photography, and adventure into an extraordinary career. His artistic journey began at the age of 14 in his native village, where he worked under local painter Gustav Adam Friedrich, renowned for his intricate church ceilings and stunning landscapes. Inspired by this mentorship, Eric was determined to pursue a life in the arts.

After five years of formal art education, Eric transitioned into photography, quickly making a name for himself in the world of European magazines. His success in fine art photography led to over 30 solo exhibitions and solidified his reputation as a creative force.

Eric's path took a dramatic turn during a magazine assignment when he discovered a secluded tropical island in the Maldives, surrounded by an untouched blue lagoon. It was 1978, a time when the Maldives were still a hidden gem, far from the bustling tourism hub they are today. Seizing the opportunity, Eric leased the island for 20 years, investing his savings to design and build a nature-friendly resort. The result was Cocoa Island Maldives, which became a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux and a major financial success. During this time, Eric took on the unexpected role of hotel director, enjoying two decades of island life.

After returning to Europe, Eric settled in the French countryside, immersing himself in the joys of rural life with horses, dogs, and classic cars—passions that remain close to his heart. In 1998, he relocated to Vancouver, Canada, and later found his way to Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, a vibrant hub for artists. There, Eric designed and built a family home complete with an ocean view and a daylight studio, a space that continues to inspire his creativity.

Now 85, Eric Klemm paints for his own pleasure, cherishing the freedom to explore his art without the pressures of gallery representation. While he occasionally parts with a piece, most of his works remain personal treasures. Reflecting on his extraordinary life, Eric embraces his art as a deeply satisfying and private expression of a journey well-lived.
